The Alentejo already has a long coastline.

Portugal keep being the poorest in Europe. Almost an underdeveloped country. That is because i do not agree this union would bring benefits to Spain

Again you show you know nothing about economics Beatha. Even when EU was at 15 Portugal wasn't the poorest Greece was. And even it was so what? The difference to Spain is minimal, especially if you take the Basque Country and Cataluña from the equation.
Who cares about Spain benefits? That supossed union will never happen because Portuguese people don't want it to.

Alentejo already has a huge coastline.

<<Even when EU was at 15 Portugal wasn't the poorest Greece was>>

Greece is richer than Portugal, revise your facts, and the difference with Spain is not minimal. You forgot Madrid. Catalonia+Madrid+Basque Country: 17 millions with double the GDP per capita of Portugal. Also Castile and Leon, Cantabria, Aragon and Valencia ( 10 millions) have more GDP than Portugal. Excluding Lisbon the rest of Portugal is extremely poor.

<<Portuguese people don't want it to. >>

You don't want, but I know of several Portuguese that desire the union, if you realize, they only can obtain benefits, it's Spain that would lose GDP per capita due to 10 millions of poorer people. Considerable funds should be transferred from Madrid an Catalonia to less developed Portugal and that is huge advantage for the Portuguese now that European funds go to Romania and Poland despite Portugal still needs them.

After the current econimic crisis Spain will be poor too. The crisis has been affecting Spain a lot, much more than other European countries

<Greece is richer than Portugal, revise your facts>

Well I've lived in Greece and I can tell you noway Greece is more developed than Portugal. But if we stick to the GDP per capita than yes Greece one is higher than Portugal. BTW I love Greece.

You must realize that's not just about the money. And you added Madrid to the equation but you forgot that Madrid's money is sucked by the other regions in to Madrid. You know some Portuguese that desire the union? Well I know many Andulician people that want independence. So where do we go from here?

Canary Islands are so much richer than Azores or Madera.

"After the current econimic crisis Spain will be poor too. The crisis has been affecting Spain a lot, much more than other European countries "

That is not true, there are many countries in Europe whose recession is bigger than the Spanish one: Ireland : -10%, UK -3%.... Iceland is not in the EU but it's in bankrupcy and Denmark is more or less in the same difficulty. Only countries with very strong industrial output like Germany and France are facing relatively better the crisis than Spain. Also not to mention Eastern Europe which is in horrific situation, much worse than Spain is. It's true that the Spanish labour market is more severely affected but it always happens the same when a crisis takes place in Spain because the Spanish labour market is more rigid and workers have more rights than in other countries. Spanish economy is not completely capitalist but has some socialist influence that should be minimised. Spain has faced more crisises before: 1973, 1983,1993, 2001 and this is just another one, nothing new.

To Beatha: of course the union would not benefit Spain. It only benefits Portugal. Indirectly they already benefit greatly from the fact that they are neighbors of Spain, a richer and more populate country. For example a high speed railway is being constructed to link Madrid and Lisbon so the Portuguese will be able to travel to Madrid to do business and to study easily and fast.

And to the Portuguese guy: then why did you say Greece was poorer than Portugal? Not only Greece has more GDP (considerably more) but more development index if we believe U.N. . Portugal is the poorest EUR-15 country undoubtly. Appart from economy, socially Portugal is also backward, for example women were not allowed to abort until a year or two ago .Among the Spanish regions, only Andalusia or Extremadura, if they were independent , would be poorer than Portugal because they live subsidised with the funds coming from Madrid . Many intellectuals in Portugal like the Nobel awarded José Saramago are in favor of the annexion of Portugal by Spain to overcome the bad economic situation of Portugal, that existed prior to the financial crisis and will presumably continue in the following decades.

I'm amazed and shocked at the same time! All these stupid Spaniards are now absessed with richness and economy. Spain was one of the most reactionnary, retrogade and underdeveloped countries in Europe until two, three decades ago!
Spanish beauties and attractivenesses are its cultural heretage and lovely landscapes. Unfortunately they have spoilt the main beautiful beaches and places by building dreadful hotels and holiday villages everywhere!

Even Slovania is richer than Portugal. And it's much cleaner. When I went to Lisbon, I couldn't stop wondering why is that this city is so untidy and full of garbage, I've never seen a dirtiest place in my whole life. And to escape from untidiness of their lives, people there go to bars with sad songs and drink until intoxicated. Grandeur of Portuguese empire LOL

I would not be surprised if during next decade Morocco becomes richer than Portugal. Many Spanish companies are building resorts in the Moroccoan coast and tourism will boom there.
help   Sun Apr 19, 2009 5:19 pm GMT
oh no! Morocco will also be spoilt by stupid Spanish companies.

I'm not neither Portuguese nor Spanish but I have to say that Portugal is much better preserved and attractive than Spain. Spain has become a sort of "modern" resort.

Portugal has the typical charming of places that have not been touched by civilisation.
