Bossa Nova is originally from Rio so a Carioca accent would be the
most appropriate way of singing.

I don't agree.
In Brazil, singers normally keep their accent when they sing (as in the US),
so Caetano Veloso will sing bossa nova in SouthernBaiano accent, and Mil Nascimento in his Mineiro accent...Rita Lee and other artists from SP will sing it in the paulistano accent.
Blues and soul are styles from the souther US, but you won't see Mariah Carey putting on a Southern or an Afroamerican accent when she sings, she sings with her native NewYork accent...
Elis Regina sang with a gaucho (RS) accent, Astrud Gilberto with a soteropolitano (Salvador) accent...
Gal Gosta sings with a Salvador accent, Toquinho with SP accent, and so on...

Well, then we have different opinions about this. Even if Caetano sings that doesn't mean I have to think it's COOL or that Bossa Nova should be sung in another Brazilian pronunciation. Lisa Ono realized it wouldn't be cool to sing with a SP accent and learned the RJ accent. Thumbs up for her!!!

That's why it doesn't sound cool (apart from the fact that Mariah Carey SCREAMS rather than sing). It's the same thing to see white people in the US trying to sing rap...it's not the same. I wonder if you know Tobymac, who is a white guy that sings christian rap. He sounds cool but one realizes RIGHT AWAY that he misses the vibe somehow.

I have no problem with this but have the RIGHT to think one accent sounds better than the other and as a CARIOCA think that Carioca accent sounds better for singing. SPECIALLY for Bossa Nova.
Cheers,
I love the songs in English and Spanish. I think they are the best languages for music.
Catalan is more melodious than Spanish. Catalan singers are very good.

I don't thinks so. Excessive SH's and ZH's just sound bad over the microphone and radio, that's why pronúncia CARIOCA are discouraged in Radio/Tv news in Brazil, most artists from Rio that want to please audience all over Brazil, try to pronounce Ss and Zs as sibilants and not palatals:for example Kid Abelha's Paula Toller: she has palatalization ratio lower than 50%, carioca's palatalize 90% of their S's and Z's.

Kelly: I respect your opinion totally but don't think that people should
sing in a way that's "more comfortable" to people from other regions. As a matter of fact I don't know why there's the a need for a "neutral pronunciation" if the language spoken all over Brazil can be understood without problems.(At least for native speakers)
Particularly I like the Rio pronunciation because it has CHARACTER and one knows right away that someone is from Rio rather than the "neutral pronunciation" that has no regional character (but leaves out the North and Northeast region). With it one could be from Brasília, Espírito Santo or even Minas Gerais.
My favorite artists sing with the [∫] and [X] sound and I just LOVE It.
