"I'm a language enthusiast" he announced to the beautiful lady who until had appeared quite interested...

Point? Don't reveal that gerunds interest you more than soccer goals?
Simon   Wednesday, September 24, 2003, 12:22 GMT
Don't have hobbies. This is a very male thing and frankly we've been doing it far too long already.

We all have to keep it a secret that we're antimoon language enthusiasts....I mean, you don't want people to think we're nerds, do you?
Jim   Thursday, September 25, 2003, 05:47 GMT
Nerds, are we nerds. Oh, no! Maybe that's why I have no friends.
Simon   Thursday, September 25, 2003, 06:23 GMT
Am I opening a can of worms here? Ok, I'll shut up.

What's wrong with liking languages? At least it can be a useful hobby unlike stamp collecting, watching sport, ....

What's the thread here in ?!
Boy   Thursday, September 25, 2003, 21:28 GMT
Sima, After reading all posts what I have understood so far and it says that the thread name could be a little bit mixture of 'hobby, nerd, enthusiast, and language'.

I hope it helps.
Christian   Friday, September 26, 2003, 18:23 GMT
Yes! let's change the topic then heheheh
Antonio   Friday, September 26, 2003, 20:34 GMT
if I say ´I´m a language enthusiast´ I´ll certainly get strange looks.

I don't know. Chicks usually seem impressed if you can tell where they are from by the way they talk, especially if you lie and say it's because you travel a lot rather than because you're a language nerd.

Yeah, I have always found that when you tell people you are conversational in three or four languages, they are always impressed. And generally, students always think it is so cool that I am a French major. As for older adults (and some younger ones too), they often times say something to my face bad about the French.
