Portugal to reform the language in favor of Brazil?

Guest   Fri Jun 27, 2008 7:30 pm GMT
In a country with huge social problems, where some people still die of famine, the most important thing should be a spelling reform? Come on, it's a paradox to the max. Brazil should be focusing on essential things like providing good welfare to their people, spelling ain't important, survival of Amazon and its people is. Brazil open your eyes and stop resolving the things that don't matter, focus on basics (like the US).

True, Brazil is well behind in Social Developement than a lot of it's Latin American neighbours.

In other words the southern states are the ones that send the immigrants to the states, the rest fo Mexico is more developed that a lot of eastern European countries.

That's absolutly true, the majority of illegal aliens coming to the US are from the impoverished southern states (Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michocan among others) remember that the image of a typical latino (short person, brown skinned, illiterate, without a trace of education) is in reality the image of an Amerindian or a predominatly Indian person. That's why some gringos think that there are no whites in Mexico and they get shocked when they see the local elites or the Mexican upper class societies because they are white or predominantly white. But of course there's no racism in Mexico and everybody belongs to "la raza" which in reality is an excuse to avoid another white vs brown race wars like the ones in Guatemala.

That the elites in Mexico are white is normal. I don't find it to be a shame. Everyone lives more or less happy in Mexico, whether they are Amerindian, mestizos or white because they accept their roles and feel Mexican all of them. Some people are masters and other have to obey, it's natural. It's the ideology of US according to which everybody is equal that causes racial tensions and frustration because blacks want to be like whites. In Mexico people simply accept their status . The secret of hapyness is to accept your circumnstances and not rebelling against them.

''But of course there's no racism in Mexico ''

I don't know. I have never seen a black Mexican or a mestizo in a Mexican soap opera. In Mexican soap operas everyone is white, rich and speaks a standard formal written language devoid of colloquialisms and slangs (unlike American or Brazilian series which are more realistic)

''In Mexico people simply accept their status .''

Which means: it's a 3rd world country.
In US, one can make a progress: being born in a poor family does not mean you can be rich, it's called American dream. That's why famous people in Mexico all came from middle class or upper classes, while in US there are many famous people with roots in poor (Oprah) or low working class (Mariah Carey, Madonna). In 3rd world countries like India, Brazil or Mexico, if you are born poor, you die poor. So sad, I don't like this society.

Yes , in US you can be born as a poor and become rich thanks to your talent. But seriously, how many people do achieve this? 1 out of 1000 people. The rest become frustrated and end up shooting their coworkers or students in a high school. It's better to teach people to accept their status and not pretend to change it because it is much more probable that they will not be able to do so, even in the land of opportunities like US.

Poor people have ambition too and can become prolific if enough effort is put in, the difference is the area they are likely to succeed. For example, many poor people become top drug-smugglers or gang members. So the society is not devoid of opportunity. Poor people can advance too and lead fulfilling lives.

<I have never seen a black Mexican or a mestizo in a Mexican soap opera>

You haven't seen enough then, Mexican soap operas show both White and Brown people (and sometimes even Blacks, even though they're like 1%) and yes they do speak more or less neutral Spanish because that's how most Mexicans speak (but of course other hispanics won't admit it).

BTW education in Mexico is free (unlike the U.S.) therefore anyone who wants to become a doctor, a lawyer, etc. can do it.

BTW it's me again (previous guest) the illegal aliens don't count because they come from the lowest of the low, therefore it's obvious they're gonna be uneducated.

Is not normal, is a discriminatory caste system Inherited from Spain. If you were born Indigenous or mestizo in Mexico and you have no money then you are damned since the begining. Like the previous guests said in Mexico (and other third world countries) if you were born poor you will die poor even though you have special talents of skills that could make you very rich in a first world country.

It's not natural that an uneducated idiot who is unable to speak or write in proper Spanish gets a the Top job with a very high salary only because he (or she) has a recomendation or its the son of an important politician or businessman. At the same time another applicant to the same job; a well educated person (with a MBA or Ph.d) who has all the requiered experience, education and special skills is unable to seize the job therefore he cannot make a living in a decent way because he has no recommendation, has no "palancas" or he is not the son or niece of an important politician, businessman or drugdealer.

I don't think a blue collar worker (with a MBA or Ph. d by the way) is happy in his job while a corrupt idiot with only a high school degree is his boss (a white collar worker) only because the fellow with the high school degree achieved his position because intrinsic corrupt practices presented in the Mexican society. But the blue collar worker needs to make a living for him and has no other options so he needs to keep working hard making ten pesos per week in order feed his family. The system presented before the Mexican revolution in the "tiendas de raya" is still presented in many aspects in the Mexican labour marker.

A lot of what you wrote reflects a third world mentality which doesn't aims at fighting in order to achieve higher perspectives or better circumstances. In fact the government in many third world countries prefers to keep the local population high levels of ignorance in order to steal as much money as possible. I the state of Chiapas in Mexico I have done research and slavery is still present within the Indians, they buy or sell the Indians (with the approvation of corrupt local authorities) and they warn the buyers that by no means the Indians should be keep in ignorance, so send them to the school is s Forbidden.

In the state of Chiapas in Mexico I have witnessed horrible violations of basic human rights againts the Indians. Slavery is still present within the local population. People buy or sell Indians (with the approvation of corrupt local authorities) and they warn the buyers that by no means the Indians should get access to education, they must be keep in ignorance, and send them to the school is forbidden.*****

Why don't the Indians rebel?

<<BTW education in Mexico is free (unlike the U.S.) therefore anyone who wants to become a doctor, a lawyer, etc. can do it.>>

Yet somehow we have the best doctors, lawyers, etc. in the world... Maybe there's a connection...

US education is free through 12th grade. After that you can get a free education via scholarships, assistantships, grants, etc. that you can't get if your parents (or yourself) make a certain amount.

And it's not necessarily true that illegal immigrants are uneducated. Many educated people from all over the world come to the US, and not all can get here legally. Many doctors, lawyers, professors, etc. who may be seeking asylum and don't get it sneak into the US every year.

People don't sell indians, indians themselves (the one that live separate in small towns in Chiapas) are the ones that sell their own daughers to their husbands (because it's part of their "beautiful" indian traditions) all of Mexico desaproves these types of costumes practized by these indians.

But why would you have to ask the government for money to study in the first place when it should be for free? in fact a lot of people have a hard time paying off their loans after they graduate, luckily in Mexico education from Elementary to University is for free.
