One of the first attempts to define, categorize, and rank global cities was made in 1998 by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network (GaWC) based at the geography department of Loughborough University. The roster was outlined in the GaWC Research Bulletin 5 and ranked cities based on their provision of "advanced producer services" such as accountancy, advertising, finance, and law.[4] The GaWC inventory identifies three levels of global cities and several sub-ranks. This roster generally denotes cities in which there are offices of certain multinational corporations providing financial and consulting services rather than denoting other cultural, political, and economic centres.

Another attempt to redefine and re-categorise leading global cities was made by GaWC in 2004. This new roster acknowledged several new indicators but still ranked economics ahead of political or cultural importance.

The GaWC in 2008 re-published their roster of leading world cities. This roster, similar to the 1998 version is sorted through categories of "Alpha" world cities (four categories), "Beta" world cities (three categories), "Gamma" world cities (three categories), and cities with "High sufficiency" and "Sufficiency" world cities presence.

The GaWC's 2008 roster of leading Alpha, Beta and Gamma World Cities is reproduced below; see the source for the complete roster:[5][6]

Fucking political correctness.
Too much politeness and courtesy to underdeveloped shitholes.
What are Madrid, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Caracas, Santiago?
All of them, less important that Zürich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Berlin or Munich. Or Barcelona. Let alone Brussels.

Among the real big ones, how many belong to Hispanic third world? None. Period.

Most of those cities are pretty ugly: concrete everywhere, skyscrapers, crowded, polluted and dirty: I would never live there! Particularly the Asian and latin america ones..

Barcelona is not more important than Madrid. Madrid is the capital of Spain , whereas Barcelona is the capital of just a region of Spain. Madrid has more population, more financial muscle, more connections with the global economy, more big companies' headquarters, more universities, etc...

Hey, in the link you gave
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_city
there is another much more sensible ranking
(not quite realistic though, putting Madrid ahead of Berlin or Moscow is what I call charity ranking, and Mexico City above Rome is downright laughable):

I have to say that Barcelona is light years nicer and more interesting than Madrid. Madrid is probably one of the ugliest European Capitals. Paris, Rome, London, Athens, Prague, Lisbon, Budapest, Vienna, Istanbul, Amsterdam and even Tallinn, Warsaw, Dublin are prettier than Madrid

Who cares, prettiness is subjective and not what the ranking measures. The most important city of the world , N.Y. is also probably one of the ugliest ones. Madrid only lacks 10 millions or more to be considered Alpha+. Now it has 7 (metropolitan area), but it's growing fast. Barcelona is not even Alpha -.

<<All of them, less important that Zürich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Berlin or Munich. Or Barcelona. Let alone Brussels.>>

well, let your preconcieved ideas at home... Madrid is the third main European city, both in terms of municipality itself than urban area. Only Paris and London are more important.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madrid

It beats far ahead all German cities which seem very provincial in comparision. Madrid is not only a big city, it is also a touristic one, and of course a major hub (madrid airport is one of the three biggest in Europe), and a much more international city than all German ones (due to the international status of Spanish language and the presence of huge latin-American, European and north African comunities. It is the hub that links Europe with all latin American markets and Spanish companies that work and invest there.

" I have to say that Barcelona is light years nicer and more interesting than Madrid. Madrid is probably one of the ugliest European Capitals."

That is your opinion. I personally find Madrid to be one of the most interesting big capitals in Europe, and a beautiful one (even if it is not as beautiful as Paris, it clearly is much more beautiful than Berlin or London.

Madrid is nicer than London??? You're completely crazy!
