Portuguese vs Spanish

Well, both languages are spoken in at least 2 continebts. Portuguese, perhaps, a little more.

In theory, Spanish has more countries, but it is a language rapidly disintegrating, and Portuguese is increasing the number of speakers and students around the World.

So, which one will be more important in the near future?

(Brazilian) Portuguese will certainly be more important in the near future.

El Español, siempre, por supuesto ...

It's more elegant: some kind of crema de la crema.

Portuguese is nice too, but the economy of Portugal could be compared with the Sierra Leone's one. Sorry.

Portugal is not Spain: you have to know a foreign language there. Older people will speak some Spanish, and younger people with speak some French.

Well, Velana, the economy of Portugal + the economy of Brazil will be stronger than the Hispanic one in several years...

BTW, your country, pain, in a World map is like Sierra Leone, not like Brazil...

I'm glad that Spanish is properly compared with other languages at its same level like Portuguese. Immediate rival of Spanish is not French but Portugal. Both have the same number of speakers.

Even Portuguese has a wider geographic distribution.

Portuguese, 4 continents
Spanish, 3 continents

Spanish should be compare with Hottentot, Fang, Bubi, Tamil, Telugu, Chuang, Miao, Wu, Tok Pisin, and Hiri Motu but these languages will be more likely to be lingua francas tahn Spanish very soon.

Spanish and Portuguese are two forms of one (Ibero Latin) language ,like English-Scots,Danish-Norwegian-Swedish,Serbian-Croatian,Indonesian-Malayan,Catalan-Occitan,Hindi-Urdu,Farsi-Dari etc.

Not really. In which continents are really important Portuguese and Spanish? In which continents, at least 50 million people speak the language? We can add English and French

English, 4 Continents. North America, Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific.

Spanish, 3 Continents. North America, Europe, South America

French, 2 Continents. Europe and Africa.

Portuguese, 1 Continent. South America

Spanish is not elegant at all. It's the ideal language of peasantry. it sometimes sounds even ridiculous. Spanish may be funny but it is not related to elegance and style at all. Other languages sound much more chic and pleasant, such as British English, French and Italian to some extent.

Spanish is sexy
Portuguese sounds low class
no one likes Pt in Europe

This is right just in south america but what about caribbean, central america o north america?. Beside spain is 46 million of inhabitants and portugal only 10.

I belive brazilian portuguese will be a valuable language in future, perhaps more important than french but spain is and will be the 2nd or 3rd language after english, ¿mandarin chinese / spanish?

Portuguese:
Total speakers Native:~200 million
Total:~240 million

Spanish:
Total speakers First language: 329 million
a as second and first language 500 million. All numbers are approximate.

english wikipedia version, not spanish one.

Take a look to this map and think about a union between spanish and brazilian portuguese. They are brother languages, very very close ones.
