does American English sound like Irish English?

<<God usually, but not always has the "British" accent in movies.>>

This is interesting; I recall an English friend of mine who tongue-in-cheek used to say that god, being such an avant-garde personality, surely speaks English with an American accent.

You do have a point though, most Americans cannot tell one British accent from another (or even from an Australian accent). However, I think the point works both ways, I'm not sure how many Britons would correctly identify an American accent. New York, Boston, LA, Buffalo, Charleston might all be grouped together for the average Englishman.

***The average American doesn't know that much about England***

That just has to be right...it's not unusual for people from England in America to be asked, quite legit - no messing about....the question: "Do they speak English in England?" or are struck dumb when told that they "speak English real well!" You've just got to love them....it's just that they live in such isolated splendour....far from the madding crowd of the great world that really, really does exist beyond the Appalachians.... LOL

It's fun doing the back and forth piss take thing. Of course the majority of Brits and the Americans don't hate each other...it would be stupid to think that. Just take the piss, as I say.

The fact is...the two countries in the entire world today least likely to go to war against each other are the UK and the USA. end of

Exactly.

Your knowledge of history must be slight, as there are a few other countries which qualify somewhat ahead of the one you have singled out as the least likely to go to war against the UK.

Yeah, Iceland and Lichtenstein probably won't be going to war with each other any time soon. lol.

Folks, isn't going to war off the point?

To my non-native ear, the Irish accent with their "rounded" vowels (sorry, don't know the phonetic terms), their "teatre, tousand", their soft palatalized [l] is absoluuutely different from AmE. Unfortunately my experience only includes BBC radio and TV. But there have been a lot of Americans and Irishmen in Hard Talk and other programmes, so I guess quite a few locations have been represented in terms of accents.

<<"Do they speak English in England?">>

I think there are pretty dumb people everywhere. I remember watching an episode of Family Fortunes (UK) a couple of years ago and the question was: "We asked a hundred people to name something that that can be wheeled". The guy's answer- "An axe!"

........but at least we have a system for marking these people out in England. At the moment we have a pilot scheme running for the next six weeks whereby the mentally challenged have to display white flags with red crosses on their cars and houses.

Cheers, that makes alot of sence, I did watch National Treasure the other day, I laughed alot, but it was a allright film.

I get the feeling that most Americans like the British, whether that be Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish (for arguments sake, part of Britain, pfff mine field!) or English, and absolutly adore the Irish. Though if you trawl enough forums you find a load of anti English/British feeling from Americans (I do this to piss me off, but then I try and make them like us Brits)

Its just a shame that the Britsh film industry only runs off Bond films, if it was better, we could educate the world about the wonders of Britain!!

In both cases, the same is true the other way round too.

***......but then I try and make them like us Brits....***

Why on earth would you bother to do that, Jim? Apart from yourself (apparently but I dinnae believe it) who cares if they like us or no, Sassenachs, Jocks or Taffs, all floating on one wee island...take us or leave us....come if they will or just stay away....simple as that. I reckon you're taking the mick there, are ye no? :-)

***.....we could educate the world about the wonders of Britain!!....***

Now I know you're taking the mick, pal! The world is largely educated and the educated world needs no enlightenment on that one. Maybe people with bones through their noses in parts of Papua New Guinea or maybe even in...........nah, I'll say nae more.... Cheers!

If you have a good musical ear Irish and American accents should sound very different to you.
