World languages

German will never be important beyond it's small confines in central Europe. The reason is English. English is like German-plus, German's big brother. There is no reason for anyone to learn German when you can learn English. If English were to decline, German could grow in importance.

-look at Eastern Europe, for years Russian was very important, now with the enlargement of the EU, German is the language that everyone wants to learn.-

Yes, German is hot in Poland, and not only in border regions or regions where Germans live (Opole) but all across the state.

German is the language of arts, literature, music and science.
Thanks to that, just like Italian, it is liked and studied all around the Globe.

Yes there is a selection of elite around the world who study them, but there is the same for many languages like Russian, but what a language needs to be considered international is to be able to break through that barrier and be spoken by people from ALL walks of life, not just the culture loving elite. The elite are always outnumbered by immigrant communities and such.

In my opinion, there is only one useful language in Europe: English.

If a Chinese or a Japanese go to Europe, he needs only English. Nowadays, English is studied in all Europe (Western, Central, Eastern). So, German is NOT useful.

German WAS an important language when in Central-Eastern Europe people didn't speak English.

The second most useful language in Europe is, probably, Russian, In Russia, Belarus, Moldova and Ucraine, English is not very studied. So, this language is more useful.

German is probably the third most useful language of Europe. But that is not too much. It is not spoken in other continents, low demography, and, the most important, a lot of German, Austrian and Swiss people speak English.

German is decreasing in number of students around the World. For instance, in Romance countries in Europe is not very studied: France (only in the border), Italy, Spain and Portugal.

So, it is probably more interesting to study a Romance language (French or Spanish) spoken also in other continents.

The last post is very sensible. Even if Germany is the engine of Europe all its business are done in English. Most Germans has a good command of english and its satellite countries know it so they prefer to learn English since it's used worldwide.
If you think it is good to learn a Romance language you have the problem to choose one because they are not quite mutually intelligible. I'd say
Portuguese and Spanish are in great degree mutually intelligible.
Spanish and Italian are much closer than Italian and French.

Russian is widely spoken in Cuba.

Russian isn't so important as German, unless within the range of former U.S.S.R.

In other words, Outside those U.S.S.R. countries, in fact Russian is hardly useful, especially outside Eastern Europe.

So, German has the same status. In fact, German is hardly useful, especially outside Central Europe.

German is a regional language, like Korean or Japanese. At least, Russian is spoken in 2 continents.

Oh, mi amigo! What are you talking about?

In Morocco and Western Sahara, Spanish is no longer a second language unlike French. French IS the administrative, commercial and educational language. In Equatorial Guinea, Spanish is official, but now it's being threatened by French.

In Philippines, Marianas and Guam, Spanish is not official, but at least is spoken several Spanish Creole languages like Chavacano or Chamorro (official in Guam and Marianas). I think the situation of French in Vietnam is much better.

Secondly, Spanish is declining in:

- Old Spanish Asia: Philippines, Marianas, and Guam. So, in ALL the old Asian Spanish colonies, your language is dead. It is hardly spoken 10,000 as second language

- Caribbean: Spanish is a minority language in DR, Cuba, and PR. There, people speak Dominicano, Borriqueño, Cubano so diffeerent language from Castellano and closer to Chavacano, Chamorro, and Papiamento. It is hardly spoken by 1-2 million as second language.

- Argentina: Spanish is the second language of Canada, but you know probably that the percentage of mother tongue speakers and second speakers is decreasing every year because more and more speak Lunfardo.

- Old Spanish America: in many countries Amerindian languages are official too, and more useful. At the same time hispanic american Spanish is eveolving into different languages like Afrikaans from Dutch. So, in the same Hispanic Africa, your language is a minority. Castellano is mangled even by educated people (only some of them speak it, of course).

- Europe: Castellano Spanish is a minority language in Spain where German is more useful in some areas (Catalan, Galician, Baque, Asturian, Aragonese, Leonese. In Spain, a lot of population speak English, French or Hindi. French, German and English are more useful in European Union.

There is NOT an important and big area where the language is the secondary or foreign tongue of at least 100 million people. That is the important difference with English, Russian, German, Arabic, Portuguese. Castellano Spanish is the first/secondary/foreign language in NOWHERE.

It is the 2nd/foreign tongue of 20 million people around the world. Even regional languages of India or China are more spoken than spoken outside their turf than Spanish.

In short, your language is the MOST INUTILE of the international languages!

It could be. But French is even less important! ;)

Thanx Guest for annoying the rest of the people.

Anyway,Spanish is the offical language in Most of the countries of Latin America (Except Brasil, etc..) I don't care if they use different accent of sometimes different words. It is like UK & USA. Their English is different but continue be English. You can say British-English or American-English. The same with Chinese in China and Singapore or Malaysia.

Spanish trumps French in every way.

<< Even regional languages of India or China are more spoken than spoken outside their turf than Spanish. >>

Please translate this into everyday English. Exactly which regional languages of India and China are you talking about?
