Best way to Learn British English?

**I'm sure there is a difference between American and British women**

As an observer with limited experience of direct contact with a very few American girls at uni and observance of American women as tourists....my response is: Yes.

Please please please don't ask me to expand any further on this one...I get embarrassed s-o-o-o easily. (If you believe that you'll believe that Loch Lomond is Scotch).

ROLLS: Adam has a Lancastrian accent. Candy's is Lakelander. Sander's is Hollander.

Mine is Edinburgher....Lowland Scottish but nothing like the Glaswegian Lowland Scottish.

How do you know? Have you talked with all these in person mate?

Edinburger, cmon mate, tell me the differences!

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese...

A guy from Hamburg is a Hamburger
A guy from Edinburgh is an Edinburgher
One you can eat...the other you spit out with distaste.....guess which is which.

No of course I havenae had the pleasure of talking in person with the lovely Adam and the much, much lovelier Candy......but I AM familiar with their local accents. Both are northern English - Candy a wee bit more northerner than Adam.....Adam says "ee bah goom" "ecky thump!" and "like heck as like!" and Candy says "Have you see John Peel at the break of the day, have you seen John Peel with his coat so gay, Peel's view halloo would awaken the dead with the sound of his horn in the morning"...all in lilting Lakelander.

Metric madness.

Pipe the newest tune of madness,
For this country's citizens,
Who are struck by metric madness...
Poor and helpless denizens.

Watch those drivers on the highways,
Ringed with frowns and without smiles,
As they labour how to render
Kilometers into miles.

On hour housewives show your pity,
As they ply their daily rounds.
To grams all must be converted.
No more ounces...no more pounds.

Voice your feelings for the farmers.
For their daughters and their sons.
They must tabulate in kilos.
No more bushels...no more tons.

And what about all those tradesmen,
Carpenters and engineers.
Draughtsmen, chemists and all others.
For them we should shed our tears.

Teachers, preachers, politicians.
Printers, newsmen...victims all.
Let us hope this metric fever
Will not drive us up the wall.

"I'm sure there is a difference between American and British women -- and I'm sure someone on this board with eventually (and indignantly) enlighten us as to what that difference might be."

I'm not sure that this has much to do with English language, but I have found in my experience, that American women have an unusual proclivity for biting!
Rolls   Fri Sep 23, 2005 8:57 pm GMT
Is that good or bad Rick?

And proclivity - nice one

a new word

for me
Rolls   Fri Sep 23, 2005 8:59 pm GMT
Actually that sounds nasty...

Why can't I just have a nice girlfreind who is English.
Rolls   Fri Sep 23, 2005 9:01 pm GMT
And doesn't bite.

And is not violent, and who speaks like the queen and does not beat up girls.

BOO-HOO

The difference surely has nothing to do with the language, but more so the region and culture.
