You are right ,Brazil's map didn't change considerably after the independence, but this was so because it was Portugal which went beyond the territorial limits assigned to this country in America by the Treaty of Tordesillas. That is the reason why Brazil is so big, but in theory proper Portuguese sphere of influence was limited to what is nowadays northwestern Brazil. So Brazil had the dirty work donde prior to their independence. On the contrary, the 13 original British colonies were a very narrow strip of land along the East coast. They had a lot of room to expand across the north American continent and logically they did so because they were a young and vibrant nation. I don' find anything blameworthy per se.

''Maybe Brazilians would not be speaking such foolish things about Portugal and the Portuguese"

What Portuguese are you talking about? As far as I know there were Portuguese in Europe, Africa, America and Asia, they are all dead by now.
Their great great grand children have many nationalities. You actually think that the Portuguese were only the ones from Portugal and the other Portuguese from outside Portugal were not Portuguese?
Before the Brazilians were Brazilians they were Portuguese.

Blaming the ancestors of the nowadays people of Brazil, Portugal, Goa, Bissau Cacheu; Ajudá, Angola, Moçambique, Cabo Verde, S. Tomé e Príncipe,Salsete, Bardez, Goa, Damão, Diu, Macau, Ilhas de Solor, Timor?!!
So confused! Brazilians had local government: alcaides, juizes ordinários, vereadores, almotacés and homens bons. Blame them please. The king and the courts were so far away , several month by ship, fresh news were old news when they got them.

''Before the Brazilians were Brazilians they were Portuguese. ''

This is not true. Brazil is a melting pot just like the US.
The greatest ethnicity in the US are Germans, and in Brazil: Italians.
We're not including mixed people with no prevalent ethnicity.

The greatest ethnicity in the US are Germans,

That may explain the inherent US tendency towards fascism.

I would have thought the greatest ethnicity to be African in Brazil.

Are you idiot? Nationality is nationality. The Brazilians were Portuguese either you like it or not. Keep being dumb but history is there. Brazilians were Portuguese and the Italians only emigrated after the Brazilian independence. When Brazilians stopped having Portuguese nationality.
Learn because it is good for your brain.

*The greatest ethnicity in the US are Germans, and in Brazil: Italians.

The greatest ethnicity in the Us are Hispanics. In Brazil Portuguese mixed with native.
Nationality and ethnicity are two different things.
Asturians are Spanish nationality with Asturian ethnicity. Bretons are French with Breton ethnicity. Sami are Norwegians with Sami ethnicity.
Keep learning.

And Hispanics are N.Americans with Spanish Latin American ethnicity.

Y los de Oviedo tienen Ovetense ethnicity no te jode.

''I would have thought the greatest ethnicity to be African in Brazil.''

Well yes, indeed, in the mixed population, along with the Portuguese and Amerindian.
But the pure, non mixed, population is: 17 % Italian, 15% Portuguese, 12% Spanish, 8 % German...

''The greatest ethnicity in the Us are Hispanics.''
''Hispanics'' is a race in the US census, not an ethnicity.

A mixed Brazilian, like Ronaldinho or Djavan would never say of himself: ''I'm of an African-Portuguese-Amerindian'' origin, but they would say: ''I'm of Brazilian origin''.

Only ''pure'' race people would say about their origin, for example, Ivete Sangalo is proud to put a stress on her Spanish origin, Fernanda Abreu is proud to put a stress on her Portuguese origin, Deborah Blando is proud of her Italian origin, Luciana Morad and Marina Elali are proud of their Arab origin...Only pure-race people in Brazil are making their origin such an important thing, mixed people consider themselves only Brazilian and don't care about their possible origins.

Not true on either scale: ethnicity or race.
The greatest MINORITY race in the US is hispanic. Get it straight. Which still falls way below the largest race which is white, made up mostly of those of German ancestry.

Thank God you are not a nation of amerindians, africans and dark portuguese!!! Otherwise that would be a shame. It would be unbearable, if the Latinamerican country with the strongest racism nowadays did not have the "pure" white Italians and Germans. What a catastrophe for you Brazilians that would be. You poor Brazilians had the bad luck to be colonized by the Portuguese people, whose majority is not blonde and blue-eyed. If at least "esses burros" were blonde and snow-white...
We noticed once again that you Brazilians are always much concerned to prove that you are a country with a high percentage of what you call "pure white europeans" (something that only exists in your minds). According to the data that you provided, 52% of the brazilian population is "pure european". And 17% (about 30-35 milliion Brazilians) are "pure Italians"...lol.
And how much is "pure black"? Or are blacks not "pure"? What is the percentage of arabs?
By the way what is the percentage of "pure Italobrazilians" who have married or at least mixed with (poor) people of "brazilian" origin? Does anybody know?

The Italians are not white.

If over 70% of the Brazilians have a least a drop of afro /amerindian in them, how can 52 % be 'pure white'?
How can pure white be pure if we all come out of Africa originally?
